Victoria Park Storm Damage Report
In the early hours of Monday morning on 25 February 2008, Rockhampton experienced an extremely heavy tropical downpour. The weather station (Rockhampton airport) recorded 163mm rain in the period 3.19am – 5am, while the Bureau of Meteorology has recorded the event as greater than once in one hundred year storm event.
Our venue is situated in Hall Street Wandal. The drainage system for Hall Street discharges directly into the Fitzroy River. During the events of the storm, the storm rain exceeded the capacity of the stormwater drainage system, resulting in stormwater damage to our venue and its contents.
Victoria Park usually provides over three hundred children and adults with hours and hours of enjoyment and exercise through gymnastics & trampolining activities on a weekly basis which is now temporarily but significantly reduced.
As we sustained storm water damage to a height of 21cm across of entire gym, in excess of $130,000 worth of equipment has been made unsuitable for use, through safety and hygiene. This does not include office, canteen and general maintenance repairs or replacements to be undertaken.
